About maintenance

At Hiromatsu Furniture, we are dedicated to crafting furniture that showcases the natural beauty and unique characteristics of solid wood. Our natural oil finish penetrates deep into the wood, protecting it from drying and staining while allowing you to fully appreciate its natural texture. With no surface coating, you can experience the true essence of the wood. Even after being crafted into furniture, the wood continues to breathe. Its color and luster will evolve over time with use, developing a unique character and patina. To preserve the natural feel and texture of the wood, we recommend our natural oil finish. Should the appearance of your oil-finished furniture begin to fade, a touch-up with natural oil will revitalize its look and deepen its charm.

Maintenance for Oil-Finished Furniture

Daily Care

For daily care, simply wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. For dining tables, which are frequently used by your family for meals, a dry cloth alone may not be enough. In such cases, we recommend wiping with a damp, well-wrung cloth, followed by a gentle dry wipe with a soft cloth to finish.

Regular Oiling

With use, the natural oil in the wood will gradually evaporate, causing the surface to dry out. If the wood begins to look pale and dry, or if you notice stains or a rough texture, we recommend oiling it approximately once every six months to a year. You can purchase a maintenance kit from our online shop.

Polishing

Natural oil finish (oil finish)

      1. Using the included sanding cloth or commercially available sandpaper (around #400 grit), sand the entire surface along the grain of the wood.
*For an even finish, try to sand the entire surface uniformly.
*For natural wood veneer products, take care not to sand excessively, as this may damage the veneer and expose the underlying substrate.
      2. Remove any sanding dust with a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner.
      3. Apply the oil evenly to the surface using a soft cloth saturated with oil.
*Apply the oil liberally to enhance the wood's natural luster.
*Applying a generous amount of oil will help to prevent an uneven finish.
      4. Allow the oil to penetrate for about 5 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.
*Excess oil may seep from the wood grain, so continue wiping with a clean cloth until the surface is no longer oily.
        *Wipe evenly to prevent streaking.
*Dispose of oil-soaked cloths safely by soaking them in water and sealing them in a bag before disposal.
      5. Leave the piece to air dry for at least 12 hours.
*Do not touch the surface until it is completely dry.
*We recommend performing this maintenance on a day with low humidity, as high humidity may impede the drying process.

Caring for Polyurethane and Lacquer-Finished Furniture

For daily care, wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. For dining tables, as with oil-finished furniture, you may also wipe with a damp, well-wrung cloth. To remove stubborn dirt, wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a solution of mild detergent and water (approximately 1:100 dilution). Soak the cloth in clean water and wring it out thoroughly before use. Then, use the damp cloth to wipe away any remaining detergent residue, and finally, dry the surface with a soft cloth.

*Never use volatile organic solvents (such as paint thinner or benzine), as these can damage or discolor the finish.

Caring for Soap-Finished Furniture

For daily care, simply wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. If the furniture becomes heavily soiled, we recommend using a dedicated maintenance kit to restore its finish. You can purchase a maintenance kit from our online shop.

    1. Thoroughly clean the surface to remove any dust or debris.
    2. Using commercially available sandpaper (around #240–#400 grit), lightly sand any scratched or stained areas.
    3. Apply Solution A to a soft cloth and wipe the surface evenly, taking care to avoid streaks.
    4. Allow the surface to dry for 2 hours, then lightly sand it again with finer sandpaper (around #600 grit) to remove any remaining roughness.
    5. Apply Solution B to a soft cloth and wipe the surface evenly, again taking care to avoid streaks.
    6. After another 2 hours of drying time, wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth to finish.
